Vocabulary
1. Neurons- a specialized cell transmitting nerve impulses; a nerve cell.
2. Axon- the long threadlike part of a nerve cell along which impulses are conducted from the cell body to other cells.
3. Dendrites-a short branched extension of a nerve cell, along which impulses received from other cells at synapses are transmitted to the cell body.
4. Myelin sheath- the insulating covering that surrounds an axon with multiple spiral layers of myelin, that is discontinuous at the nodes of Ranvier, and that increases the speed at which a nerve impulse can travel along an axon—called also medullary sheath.
5. Action Potential- the change in electrical potential associated with the passage of an impulse along the membrane of a muscle cell or nerve cell.
6. Central Nervous System- Primary control center of the nervous systems.
7. Peripheral Nervous System- The interconnecting system that sends signals back and forth through the nervous system.
8. Autonomic Nervous System- Nervous systems that controls the body's organ and voluntary systems.
9. Sympathetic Nervous System- system that alerts the body
10. Parasympathetic Nervous System- system that calms down the body.
11. Somatic nervous system- Is the part of the peripheral nervous system associated with skeletal muscle voluntary control of body movements. The SoNS consists of afferent and efferent nerves.
